Skema encoding ini biasanya disebut dengan akronim EBCDIC, yang bisa dilafalkan sebagai &#8220;ehb-suh-dik&#8221; atau &#8220;ehb-kuh-dik.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>EBCDIC dikembangkan oleh IBM pada tahun 1963 untuk melengkapi penggunaan punched card yang dipakai dalam penyimpanan dan pemrosesan data di era awal komputasi. Meskipun punched card kini sudah usang, skema encoding ini masih digunakan sampai sekarang, terutama di komputer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/mainframe\/\">mainframe<\/a> dan midrange IBM yang menjalankan sistem operasi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/z-OS\/\">IBM Z\/OS<\/a> atau IBM I. Beberapa sistem pihak ketiga juga masih menggunakan standar EBCDIC, seperti mainframe Fujitsu Siemens yang menjalankan OS BS2000.<\/p>\n<p>EBCDIC mirip dengan skema encoding American Standard Code for Information Interchange (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/ASCII-American-Standard-Code-for-Information-Interchange\/\">ASCII<\/a>), meskipun keduanya tidak kompatibel. Karena ASCII sudah menjadi standar global yang luas digunakan, saat ini ASCII jauh lebih populer dibanding EBCDIC. Setiap code page diidentifikasi dengan Coded Character Set Identifier (CCSID). Satu code page dapat berisi hingga 256 karakter, dengan setiap karakter direpresentasikan oleh nilai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/binary\/\">biner<\/a> 8-bit (string berisi delapan angka 0 atau 1). Misalnya, nilai biner dari hex A7 adalah 1010 0111. Empat bit pertama, 1010, setara dengan hex A dan menunjukkan bahwa karakter tersebut adalah huruf kecil atau karakter khusus tertentu. Huruf kecil juga bisa diawali dengan nilai biner 1000 (hex 8) atau 1001 (hex 9).<\/p>\n<p>Empat bit terakhir untuk huruf x adalah 0111. Nilai ini unik dalam kelompok karakter yang dimulai dengan 1010 (hex A), tetapi tidak unik di seluruh code page. Misalnya, huruf kapital P memiliki nilai biner 1101 0111 (hex D7). Empat bit terakhirnya sama dengan huruf x.<\/p>\n<p>Karakter-karakter dalam sebuah code page EBCDIC juga dapat direpresentasikan dengan nilai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/decimal\/\">desimal<\/a> 0 sampai 255. Misalnya, nilai desimal untuk huruf kecil x adalah 167, sedangkan untuk huruf kapital P adalah 215. Code page EBCDIC tidak kompatibel dengan jenis code page lain. Gambar 4 memperlihatkan beberapa perbedaan antara encoding EBCDIC dan ASCII. Konversi ini bisa dilakukan menggunakan software konversi khusus atau layanan tertentu. Misalnya, vEdit menyediakan software sekaligus layanan konversi, sementara Microsoft Azure Logic App memungkinkan konversi EBCDIC ke ASCII.
