Biasanya, MSB adalah bit yang posisinya paling kiri, atau bit yang dikirim lebih dulu dalam sebuah urutan. Misalnya, bilangan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/decimal\/\">desimal<\/a> 157 sama dengan biner <b>10011101<\/b> (atau nilai heksadesimal <b>9D<\/b>).<\/p>\n<p>Angka 1 di sisi kiri biner tersebut adalah MSB, karena memiliki nilai tempat 128 (yang paling besar dalam satu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/byte\/\">byte<\/a>). Misalnya, kalau data biner dikirim secara serial (satu per satu), biasanya urutan pengiriman ditentukan: apakah <i>MSB first<\/i> atau <i>LSB first<\/i>. Penentuan ini penting karena membantu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/program\/\">program<\/a> memahami bagaimana cara membaca data biner tersebut.<\/p>\n<p>Konsep MSB dan LSB juga berlaku untuk byte. <i>Most Significant Byte<\/i> adalah byte dengan nilai tempat paling besar dalam sebuah word yang terdiri dari banyak byte. Seperti halnya bit, byte yang paling kiri (atau dikirim pertama) biasanya disebut MSB. Urutan ini dikenal sebagai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/big-endian-and-little-endian\/\">big-endian<\/a>, karena mulai dari \u201cujung besar\u201d (MSB). Sebaliknya, kalau urutannya dibalik\u2014LSB ada di kiri atau dikirim duluan\u2014maka disebut <i>little-endian<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Contoh lain: bilangan desimal 36.765 bisa disimpan sebagai bilangan biner 2-byte: <b>10001111 10011101<\/b>. Nilai heksadesimal juga menunjukkannya dengan menuliskan MSB terlebih dahulu (<b>8F<\/b>), baru kemudian LSB (<b>9D<\/b>). Format ini disebut big-endian. Namun, kalau urutannya dibalik jadi <b>9D8F<\/b>, maka disebut little-endian karena LSB ditulis lebih dulu.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam kondisi tertentu, urutan byte bisa saja tidak mengikuti aturan big-endian maupun little-endian.
