Satuan ini biasanya digunakan untuk mengukur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/radiant-energy\/\">radiasi elektromagnetik (EM)<\/a> dan getaran seperti suara. Hertz menunjukkan jumlah siklus yang melewati suatu titik dalam satu detik. Dalam standar SI, 1 Hz berarti satu siklus gelombang per detik, yang menjadi acuan dasar pengukuran frekuensi. Misalnya, jika ada 200 siklus yang melewati titik tertentu dalam 1 detik, maka frekuensinya adalah 200 Hz.<\/p>\n<p>Kebanyakan frekuensi jauh lebih tinggi dari itu, sehingga digunakan satuan kelipatan seperti megahertz agar lebih praktis. Lebih mudah menulis 1 MHz daripada 1.000.000 Hz atau 100 MHz daripada 100.000.000 Hz. Rentang antara 1 MHz sampai 999 MHz termasuk dalam gelombang radio di sisi bawah spektrum EM. Gelombang radio 1 MHz berada di sekitar tengah <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/band\/\">band<\/a> siaran AM, sedangkan 100 MHz ada di tengah band siaran FM.<\/p>\n<p>Frekuensi gelombang berbanding terbalik dengan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/wavelength\/\">panjang gelombang<\/a>. Panjang gelombang adalah jarak antara dua puncak berturut-turut. Semakin pendek panjang gelombang, semakin tinggi frekuensinya, begitu pula sebaliknya. Suara di atas 20 kHz disebut ultrasound, yang bisa mencapai lebih dari 200 MHz. Beberapa hewan seperti kucing, anjing, kelelawar, dan paus beluga bisa mendengar ultrasound, meski biasanya hanya di frekuensi bawahnya.<\/p>\n<p>Dalam dunia medis, ultrasound dengan frekuensi megahertz digunakan secara luas, misalnya untuk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/medical-imaging\/\">medical imaging<\/a>. Umumnya, alat ultrasound menggunakan frekuensi antara 2 MHz hingga 18 MHz. Semakin tinggi frekuensi, resolusi gambar semakin baik.
