Hasil pengukurannya berupa sebuah nilai skalar (satu angka) yang bisa dipakai untuk membandingkan dua vektor dan melihat bagaimana efek perubahan posisi salah satunya atau keduanya. Nilai dot product didapatkan lewat perhitungan matematis berdasarkan properti vektor.<\/p>\n<p>Vektor sendiri adalah besaran yang punya arah sekaligus magnitudo (panjang vektor). Gambar 1 menunjukkan dua vektor (<strong>a<\/strong> dan <strong>b<\/strong>) pada bidang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/Cartesian-coordinates-rectangular-coordinates\/\">Cartesius 2D<\/a>. Vektor <strong>a<\/strong> memiliki magnitudo 8 dan membentuk sudut 115\u00b0 dari <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/x-and-y-coordinates\/\">sumbu x<\/a> (berlawanan arah jarum jam). Vektor <strong>b<\/strong> punya magnitudo 10 dan membentuk sudut 45\u00b0 dari sumbu x. Notasinya menggunakan tanda titik di antara dua vektor, misalnya <strong>a<\/strong> dan <strong>b<\/strong>, seperti pada rumus berikut:<\/p>\n<p>a \u2022 b<\/p>\n<p>Rumus lengkap untuk dot product adalah dengan mengalikan magnitudo vektor <strong>a<\/strong> dengan magnitudo vektor <strong>b<\/strong>, lalu mengalikan hasilnya dengan cosinus (cos) sudut di antara kedua vektor:<\/p>\n<p>a \u2022 b = |a| \u00d7 |b| \u00d7 cos(\u03b8)<\/p>\n<p>Simbol garis tegak di kiri dan kanan melambangkan magnitudo vektor. Kadang dipakai garis ganda untuk notasi yang sama. Dari Gambar 2:<\/p>\n<p>Vektor <strong>a<\/strong> = (-3.4, 7.3)<\/p>\n<p>Vektor <strong>b<\/strong> = (7.1, 7.1)<\/p>\n<p>Rumusnya menjadi:<\/p>\n<p>a \u2022 b = (a<sub>x<\/sub> \u00d7 b<sub>x<\/sub>) + (a<sub>y<\/sub> \u00d7 b<sub>y<\/sub>)<br \/>\na \u2022 b = (-3.4 \u00d7 7.1) + (7.3 \u00d7 7.1)<br \/>\na \u2022 b = -24.12 + 51.83<br \/>\na \u2022 b = 27.71<\/p>\n<p>Karena ada pembulatan, hasil (27.71) sedikit berbeda dari perhitungan sebelumnya (27.36), tapi keduanya menunjukkan metode ini valid.<\/p>\n<p>Pendekatan serupa berlaku untuk ruang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/3-D-three-dimensions-or-three-dimensional\/\">3 dimensi<\/a> dengan menambahkan komponen z:<\/p>\n<p>a \u2022 b = (a<sub>x<\/sub> \u00d7 b<sub>x<\/sub>) + (a<sub>y<\/sub> \u00d7 b<sub>y<\/sub>) + (a<sub>z<\/sub> \u00d7 b<sub>z<\/sub>)<\/p>\n<p>Misalnya, jika a<sub>z<\/sub> = b<sub>z<\/sub> = 5, maka:<\/p>\n<p>a \u2022 b = (-3.4 \u00d7 7.1) + (7.3 \u00d7 7.1) + (5 \u00d7 5)<br \/>\na \u2022 b = -24.12 + 51.83 + 25<br \/>\na \u2022 b = 52.71<\/p>\n<p>Hasilnya 25 lebih besar dari 27.71 sebelumnya karena ada tambahan dari komponen z.<\/p>\n<p>Dot product sering digunakan di fisika, matematika, dan bidang lain yang aplikatif. Contoh praktisnya adalah pada pemasangan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linuxid.net\/istilah\/solar-power\/\">panel surya<\/a>.
